To measure pressure loss across components, students use a piezometer set and differential pressure gauge (included). To perform experiments students record the temperature of water in the hydraulic bench and set the hydraulic bench to pump water through a circuit. They measure pressure losses across instruments or components. The hydraulic bench gives an external flow rate for reference and comparison. The flow measurement instruments show students the common methods of measuring water flow. They also give applications of the steady flow energy equation (Bernoulli™s equation). Students use a Venturi meter and an orifice plate meter and compare the losses of each. They also find the losses in a rapid enlargement. The equipment also includes a Pitot-static tube. PIPE SURGE & WATER HAMMER APPARATUS

Specification: PIPE SURGE & WATER HAMMER APPARATUS Pipe surge and water hammer are two related but independent phenomena which arise when fluid flowing in a pipe is accelerated or decelerated. The associated pressure transients can be damaging to pipe work or components and systems must be designed to avoid or with stand them. The equipment designed by clearly demonstrates the different effects resulting from gradual or instantaneous changes in fluid velocity. Effect of initial fluid velocity can also be investigated. Pipe surge resulting from a gradual change in fluid velocity is clearly seen as fluctuating changes in head in a surge shaft. Water hammer resulting from a rapid change in fluid velocity is clearly seen as large changes in pressure monitored using a pair of transducers and indicated using an oscilloscope. The equipment comprises two stainless steel pipes connected to a constant head tank. A service module provides the water supply to the head tank and also incorporates a volumetric tank for flow rate measurement, sump tank, circulating pump and flow control valve. Water enters the two test pipes via the constant head tank and discharges into the volumetric tank. A dump valve in the volumetric tank returns the water to the sump tank. The pipe surge test section incorporates a clear acrylic surge shaft to enable visualization of its oscillatory characteristics to be demonstrated. A metric scale on the shaft permits the height of the oscillations to be measured. The test pipe terminates with a lever operated gate valve and separate flow control valve.

Specification: CENTER OF PRESSURE APPARATUS The Centre of Pressure Apparatus has been designed to determine the static thrust exerted by a fluid on a submerged surface and allow comparison of the measured magnitude and position of this force with simple theory. A fabricated quadrant is mounted on a balance arm, which pivots on knife-edges. The knife-edges coincide with the centre of arc of the quadrant. Thus, of the hydrostatic forces acting on the quadrant when immersed, only the force on the rectangular end face gives rise to a moment about the knife-edges. WIND TUNNEL TEST RIG

Specification: WIND TUNNEL TEST RIG The Wind Tunnel is simple and safe in operation. It is supplied as a complete self-contained facility mounted on castors for ease of movement. Main equipment comprises the tunnel with a two-component balance system and an air speed indicator. Air enters the test section through a carefully designed contraction followed by an aluminum honeycomb flow straightened designed to ensure that the flow is steady in both magnitude and direction and has a flat transverse velocity profile. A low angle diffuser at the outlet end contributes to flow stability in the test section. A five bladed fan is located at the outlet of the diffuser section. The fan is driven by an AC motor supplied from an inverter speed control unit allowing smooth control of air speed. The parallel octagonal test section is manufactured from clear acrylic and may be retracted on rails to permit unobstructed access to the models. The two-component balance consists of a pair of balances supported on knife edges on mutually perpendicular axes parallel to and normal to the axial centre of the tunnel. Lift and drag components of force exerted on the models under test are balanced by sliding weights along the arms of the balance until a state of null deflection is reached. Graduations in units of force allow lift and drag to be read directly. The complete assembly is linked to a simple oil filled damping pot. Models are mounted on the balance within the working section and a protractor with cursor allows angles of incidence to be changed quickly and accurately while the tunnel is running. The accuracy of the tunnel and its instrumentation make it suitable for undergraduate and simple research work. Specification: DOUBLE STAGE AIR COMPRESSOR TEST RIG The present set-up is designed to study the Double Stage Air compressor. The set-up consists of a double stage reciprocating type air compressor. It is driven by a motor through a belt and pulley system. The drive motor is swinging field type and supplied with dial type spring balance which permits direct torque measurement. This arrangement facilitates the end user to calculate the power transmitted by the motor to the compressor, accurately. To calculate input power to the motor, an energy meter is provided and in this way, by knowing the input and output, efficiency of the compressor is calculated easily. The outlet of the air compressor is connected to air reservoir and suction is connected to another air manifold tank. The compressor draws air from this manifold tank which is provided with bellow at one side. This tank also has an orifice with manometer to observe and calculate the air flow rate. RECIPROCATING PUMP TEST RIG

Specification: RECIPROCATING PUMP TEST RIG The present Reciprocating Pump Test Rig is a self-contained unit operated on closed circuit basis containing a sump tank. The set-up consists of a Double acting, Single Cylinder Reciprocating Pump coupled with an AC Motor. Flow of water is measured by using measuring tank and stopwatch. Vacuum gauge is fitted on suction line and Pressure gauge is fitted on delivery line to measure the pressure. Experimentation: To determine the characteristics of reciprocating pump and to find out total head, pump efficiency, overall efficiency & volume metric efficiency.
